Samsung hinted at the release of the Galaxy Fold smartphone back in November 2018. Just a month ago it whetted the appetites of Galaxy enthusiasts during its Galaxy Unpacked event, in which it revealed more details about the upcoming unique phone. In addition to the foldability feature, Samsung plans to add a wide range of functions to the phone set to officially launch on April 26 (May 3 in Europe).
Starting price: $1980.00. At least their throwing in some free earbuds.
Galaxy Fold Details
First wave buyers can choose from an LTE and 5G version. The Fold operates via a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display that allows expands into a tablet-sized screen. When a user is finished, they can fold the phone back into a compact size and put it in their pocket.
The main display is QXGA+ resolution (4.2:3). A phone mode display is 4.6-inch HD+ (12:9). The device will contain 512 GB of Universal Flash Storage 3.0 (eUFS) for accelerated performance and a Qualcomm 7nm octa-core processor and 12 GB of RAM. Samsung has added two batteries to the phone. The batteries are separated in fold mode but brought back together in the combined mode for a total of 4,380 mAh.
Sturdy Hinge-System Construction
Samsung has reinforced the folding phone with a hinge system backed by concealed interlocking gears. The gears allow the Galaxy Foldto convert back and forth from table mode to phone mode. The durable construction gives the Galaxy Fold a near-guaranteed life of at least five years.
Notable Features
Triple Camera
The Fold contains three onboard cameras that can be accessed in both tablet and phone modes. A 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 12-megapixel wide-angle, and telephoto cameras at the rear and a 10-megapixel cover camera give users plenty of options for taking photos.
Color Options
Samsung is creating four different colors for the Galaxy Fold. All the colors have not been released yet, but Samsung has announced that they will be Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green, Astro Blue.
Multi-App Use
Users will be able to run three apps simultaneously on across the screens. This is made possible due to the app continuity system. The system allows users to adjust the apps when the phone toggles between tablet and phone mode. Many of the well-known apps have already been optimized for the new device.
Fingerprint Verification
One new feature that users will find efficient is the new fingerprint verification. Although the Galaxy has already featured fingerprint verification in the past, now the function is side-mounted instead of top-mounted. This will make it easier to access the platform quickly.
Samsung DeX
Samsung DeX is a platform that turns your smartphone into a desktop computing device. In early 2018, the DeX Pad was launched which turns your phone into a touchpad and contains USB, HDMI and USB-C ports for linking additional peripheral devices. The Galaxy Fold will accommodate all of these and more for Samsung DeX.
