New Samsung Foldable Smart Phones: Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3
Samsung recently announced two new foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, a smartphone that opens outward like a book to form a tablet, and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G with a design reminiscent of flip phones from the early 2000s. The $999 Galaxy Z Flip3 5G and the $1,799 Galaxy Z Fold3 5G are the first to be water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about them getting damaged in the rain. Both phones have a new layer that is 80% more durable than previous folding screens, new stronger aluminum frames, and Corning glass that is more resistant to scratches and drip damage.
The Z Fold3
This is the first time Samsung has introduced the S Pen to folding phones. The more expensive Galaxy Z Fold3 5G will support a special version of the pen that automatically slides back into the pen’s casing and can protect the phone screen from scratches.
S Pen for Z Fold3 comes in two options: S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. Both feature a specially engineered retractable Pro tip with force limit technology to protect Z Fold3’s Main Screen for peace of mind while using the S Pen. Users can take advantage of fully optimized S Pen features on their foldable screen, which is perfect for on-the-go multitaskers. You can take advantage of fully optimized pen features on the massive 7.6-inch screen – you can jot down notes during a video call or check off a to-do list while reading emails, sketch, sign documents and take notes on your foldable screen.
The Galaxy Z Fold3 is also the first phone in the United States to have a camera hidden beneath the main screen. Thanks to the Under Display Camera technology, you don’t see any small cutouts anywhere on the screen. Instead, the camera can see the pixels above for selfie pictures. The phone also has three cameras on the back for wide, ultra-wide, and zoom pictures and a fifth camera on the front.
The Z Fold3 is built to be more durable and dependable than its predecessors. The Infinity Flex display is layered to protect against daily wear and tear and features scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass. The outer frame is made of 10% stronger aluminum than previous models, and the hinge, where the smartphone folds, is designed with shorter internal bristles to repel dust and other particles better.
The Z Fold3 is built with a sleeker, thinner and lighter design for better portability, has enhanced Flex mode features that let you do more at once, and comes with a choice of three colors – Phantom Silver, Phantom Black, and Phantom Green.
The Z Flip3
The Z Flip3, which opens and closes vertically like a traditional flip phone, is the first foldable phone under $1,000, and while a grand isn’t cheap, the Z Flip3 brings foldable phone technology down to a much more attainable price.
It’s an evolution of Samsung’s previous foldable device – it’s slightly thinner, shorter, and narrower, and now comes with a thinner hinge and a redesigned cover screen that is four times larger at 1.9 inches, correcting one of the biggest complaints about the original Flip. This makes it easier to view notifications and messages without having to open the Z Flip3. You can even take selfies when the Z Flip3 is closed. The touchscreen doubles as a viewfinder – simply double press the power button to launch the camera, and you’re golden. Plus, scrolling and sharing are super smooth, thanks to Z Flip3’s new 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.
The screen is 80% more durable, and the phone itself sports Gorilla Glass Victus on the outer display and Samsung’s new Armor Aluminum body. In short, the Z Flip3 is built to withstand more. Another big Galaxy Z Flip3 upgrade involves the phone’s stereo speakers – the Z Flip3’s sound system is much better than the original.
However, the camera on Z Flip3 is unchanged from the original Flip. On the back, you get a 12MP wide-angle shooter and a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 10MP selfie camera. The Z Flip3’s camera improvements come down to software, offering enhancements to portrait mode and indoor photography.
