Zuckerberg Predicts the Future of Virtual Reality
A decade ago, many people would have said that virtual reality is too hypothetical to resonate — but here we are. In this week’s On the Tech Talk segment, Luis Alvarez, CEO of Alvarez Technology Group, discusses Zuckerberg’s prediction on the future of meetings in VR.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Prediction
According to Mark Zuckerberg, you will be going to meetings where you will digitally teleport to them in ten years. People from the hospitality industry and airline industry are going to be happy about this move. Luiz said that the pandemic has fundamentally changed a lot in how people meet. The question as we advance is whether it will get back to normal. Or we are going to get around and forget the pandemic ever happened and go back to 2019 again.
What is Virtual Reality?
Alvarez said that the reality is what Mark Zuckerberg is talking about: Augmented reality. A virtual reality that involves people wearing goggles has advanced quite a bit in the last year. As many companies have thrown money into remote services and remote work. Within ten years, the VR world will be so sophisticated that you can put on goggles and be at your current house. Or in a meeting and feel like you are there physically, and you have that 360.
Virtual Reality Experience
Luiz said that it is an amazing experience for those who have never worn virtual reality goggles. Because you see a whole different world. Zuckerberg predicts that it will be more than work. And people will not be traveling like they do today. Instead, they will be interacting with each other whether it’s a family reunion or a company meeting.
What About Our Normal Ways?
According to Luiz, people who want to feel the need for a tactile experience will not be affected. A significant impact will be felt on the big events such as vacations. People will want to fly somewhere. Whether to get to Disney World and fly in Florida, or get on a cruise ship to go out in the Caribbean. Small meetings and conventions that have taken place for years at different locations may go away.
World on the Move
The world is waiting for the moment in which everyone can travel openly again. And get to the reality of being able to go to big trade shows, conferences, and vacations. Because that will never change, but it is clear that there will be an application for VR. As a way to be a little more sophisticated than the traditional Zoom meeting. All these things that are trying to replace reality cannot replace what we love to do.
Entertainment Industry Prediction
Luiz noted that it’s interesting to see how technology is changing so many things. He said he recently saw a prediction that there will be a lot of public demand once theaters start to open. This could be more significant than ever before.
But the prediction is that the movie business or people starting to go to movies will trail down. This will be caused by a fundamental realignment where many movie houses in the community will not have. Since people will be content watching movies on their 50- or 80-inch television.
One of the saving graces for Hollywood is that most people have these big TVs in their homes. This has enabled people to do on-demand movies and watch them at home.
