“This is, unfortunately, a continuous problem for Microsoft. It goes back years for all their operating systems. In particular, with Windows 10 there’s been an issue. When updates get pushed out, they adversely affect a small number of computers,” according to Luis Alvarez, CEO of the Alvarez Technology Group.
Setting Your Windows 10 Computer to Update Security Only?
In a recent On the Air podcast, Alvarez suggests tweaking your Windows environment settings to only install security updates. Then, once in a while, you can go in and install all the performance updates when there’s a major update. Follow the instructions in this Microsoft blog to set your Windows 10 updates to security only.
Below, you can find workarounds for the two bugs resulting from recent Microsoft performance enhancements.
How Can You Resolve High CPU Usage by Microsoft Cortana?
In Windows 10 v1903, released in September 2019, Microsoft rolled out several performance enhancements. The changes to Mixed Reality increased its compatibility with Win32 apps. Unfortunately, the release caused additional problems with the Cortana voice assistance eating up a lion’s share of CPU usage.
Users have to go to the registry to fix it with the following steps:
- Press Win+R and enter regedit.
- Go to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\
- Find the REG_DWORD value “BingSearchEnabled”
- Right-click to set Value to 0.
NOTE: If you don’t see REG_DWORD, right-click in the right pane, select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value. The system will show the setting.
What About Bluetooth Speaker Problems?
The cumulative update from July 2019 caused issues for anyone with internal PC speakers. Bluetooth speakers had poor sound or no sound after the upgrade. There’s still no foolproof fix. However, there’s a workaround. In the command prompt, enter this command:
sfc /scannow
