Apple AirTags: Everything You Need to Know
Apple has introduced yet another smart device that any Apple user can use to track all manner of things. The Apple AirTags use Apple’s existing network of devices and ultra-wideband technology to help track down lost or stolen items.
How They Work
Apple AirTags are tiny, elegant devices that Apple users can use to track vehicles, bikes, backpacks, pets, and any other property you want to keep track of. The AirTags use Apple’s already existing network of devices that help you determine the location of your missing property.
The tags use Apple’s find my network feature built into Apple devices that allow them to work as tracking devices. You can apply the AirTags to any property. Should you lose your property, you can open the Find My app on your Ipad or iPhone, and if the property is close to any Apple device, you will get the address or coordinates of its location.
You will be able to see the tag’s location, and the app can also play a sound from the AirTag to help you know the item’s precise location. If you cannot locate the AirTag, you can use an option in the Find My app to place the tag in Lost Mode. You will have to create a custom message that will be displayed when another Apple user finds the tag.
The tags have an NFS chip in them that makes them readable by iPhones or any other NFS-enabled device. When another user holds their device near the tag, they will get the owners’ contact details or instructions on how to reach the rightful owner of the property.
It is impossible for Android users to register an Apple AirTag with their device. However, if the Android device has the NFS functionality, it can locate lost or stolen AirTags.
How to Use Apple AirTags
Setting up these smart tags is very simple. Once you buy your device, pull out the tab to activate it and hold it next to your Apple device. The device will detect the AirTag, and you will receive a prompt to set it up as you would a HomePod device or AirPods.
You can personalize the tag and name it after the property that you want to attach it to. The AirTag is automatically registered to your Apple ID and will contain your contact information, location, or any other information on your Apple ID. Unlike other smart tracking devices that attract a yearly subscription, Apple AirTags are available at a one-time cost of $29.
Can AirTags Be Used to Track Someone?
AirTags are tiny devices, and one can slip one into your bag or car and use it to track you from their devices. To avoid this, your device’s Find My app will alert you of any AirTag around you that is not connected to your Apple ID.
You can be given the option to play a sound and finds its exact location or disable the device. However, to do this, your device should be using iOS 14.5+
Are They Safe and Reliable?
Since the tag is registered to your Apple ID, you have complete control over it. You can only deactivate the tag from the Find My app option on your Apple device. Someone else can’t link the tag to their device if you are still using it.
Though the tags are connected to Apple’s network, it does not store any history or data. The connection with the network is end-to-end encrypted, and only the owner knows its identity and has access to its location.
Apple Corporation or any other Apple device cannot determine the location of an AirTag. This also means that it is impossible to track someone’s movement using their AirTag. Contact us for more information.
