On Wednesday, July 9th, 2014, the AG Tech Summit 2014 took place at the Monterey Plaza Hotel in Monterey, CA. The summit was held to discuss the convergence of Silicon Valley’s technology and Salinas Valley’s agriculture. While the two valleys are only 50 miles apart, the convergence of technology and agriculture has been slow to occur. In fact, the Steinbeck Innovation Cluster has been working for a few years to build those relationships.
The AG Tech Summit 2014 gave many industry leaders, including David Evans, Former Cisco Futurist, the chance to discuss the importance of innovative technology in the agriculture industry. During the summit, David Evans went into detail about what agriculture will look like in 50 years when the world’s population is estimated to be 9 billion people. Ultimately, we’ll have to produce more food with the same amount of land and resources we have already.
As an industry leader, David discussed how fundamental it is to integrate innovative technology into the agriculture industry for the purpose of:
- Enabling better yields.
- Ensuring better production.
- Improving use of land.
- Saving water.
- Reducing the amount of pesticides.
In addition, Forbes attended the summit and announced the details of their annual Reinvent America Summit! The event will be focused on the agricultural industry and held in Salinas Valley in July 2015.
